I propped my elbow up on the shovel, which I'd jabbed deep into the soil, watching with a more or less amused expression as the boys continued to dig a hole big enough to fit the massive demon that now lay dead by a tall oak tree.
"You know," I mused, smirking "If we take the time to give every demon we kill a burial ceremony, we're gonna be in this town for a looooong time."
"Not if a certain pixie and certain Child of Lillith gave us a hand." Anubis shot back, wiping sweat from his dark brow.
"And get sweaty and gross?" Anna-Marie scoffed "No thanks." For once, I wasn't the only one to glare daggers at her.
"Okay, then what's Fallyn's excuse?" Virgil asked, tossing another shovel full of dirt behind him.
"Fallyn has no excuse," I replied, cheerfully "Fallyn is just extremely lazy. And doesn't like any of you."
"And this is why you're still single and lack friends." Colby muttered. I didn't hesitate to casually whack him upside the head with my shovel. His vampire strength kept it from injuring him, but his still winced before flicking me a boyish grin.
"Jus' kidding Fal." he assured me. "Love ya, baby sis." I rolled my eyes and whacked him again. His grin only widened.
"Idiot." I muttered.
"Why can't one of you kids of Lillith just I incinerate the body or something?" Dillon asked
"Or just make it dissapear." Spencer added.
"Well, burning demon flesh isn't exactly an easily ignored stench, for one." Shadow answered, pushing black hair out of his eyes. "Secondly, magic attracts demons. That's why I had Fallyn steal these shovels instead of conjuring them up. Magic is a demon magnet. The more we use it, the quicker our cover gets blown."
"Plus, this is just do much more fun!" Lukas added, sarcastically. Jason give him a 'shut-up' look.
"How close are we to the city?" I asked, squinting at the vibrant scarlet sun sinking below the horizon "It's getting dark."
"Scared of the dark, Fallyn?" Anna-Marie smirked, slyly. I rolled my eyes.
"I'm bioluminescent, moron." I told her, relodging my shovel into the dirt "It wouldn't make a difference. It's just bad for us to be out in a demon infested area with this many warlocks out in the open during the witching hour."
"Why is that?" Anubis asked. I shook my head at him.
"You really are empty in the skull aren't you?" I Sighed "The witching hour strengthens kids of Lillith, gives 'em a big, powerful and blatantly obvious aura of magic. Walking around with a bunch of Lillih's kids with so many demons around is like asking to get attacked."
Anubis blinked, looking dumbfounded.
"And here I thought you were just an idiot." Jason teased. I kicked some dirt at him.
Shadow smiled.
"Don't worry, kiddo." he said "We're done here. Jason, Anubis, Virgil- help me drag thus ugly thing into this hole. Lukas, Dillon Spencer- Bury the body. Colby and Anna-Marie, cover our tracks. Make sure there are no mundanes around."
"What about me, Fearless Leader?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Fal, I need you to return the shovels." I groaned, irritably.
"Shadow." I whined. He sighed.
"Come on, Fal. It won't kill you."
"What if it does?" I challenged, frowning.
"Then I'll pay in full for your funeral." He promised, tossing me his shovel.
"Just go, you big dork." Colby laughed. I let out an angry huff of air, but gathered the shovels and sprinted towards the she'd I'd stolen the shovels from, grumbling to myself about the unfair laziness of my counterparts in a stunnIng act of extreme hypocrisy. Just as I'd ducked under a hanging branch of a massive poplar tree, something cold and hard gripped my throat, yanking me back roughly. I let out a strangled yelp, dropping all the shovels but one, before whirling around the best I could with the restraining hand around my throat and lashed out with as much ferocity I could summon, attacking the unknown threat desperately with my shovel. The thing simply gripped my long hair and pulled me roughly to the ground.
... I really hate my life, sometimes.
