Worms are cool! =D This blog is going to show you just how cool they are! Cool or what?

Worms live inside healthy soil since it provides everything they need to live - nutrients, water and other organic material. 

Your probably wondering why worms are so slimy? Well that's because they need to be to survive! The same as some amphibians like frogs. They also have small hairs (called setae) all over their body which help them to move. (I know! Who would of thought worms had hair?!)

Worms also have light receptors on the front part of their body. Kinda useful since they don't have eyes. 

Worms eat their food like us. Not with a knife and fork, but they eat it with their mouthes (or anteriors). Worms actually have a flap (the prostomium) which hangs over their mouth. This controls what food gets into their mouth. Worms eat organic matter such as plants and dead animals. If the food is too big, the worm can moisten it to make it softer, (like we do when we chew) then the worm sucks the food to get it into their mouth. Worms can't really chew their food. Because of this, they have a part of the body called a gizzard. This is where the worm uses sand and other particles (which the worm has eaten) to crush the food and help with digesting it. Some birds also have gizzards. 

Ever wondered which side is the front and back of a worm? It's simple really! The worm has a part of it's body called the clitellum. The worm uses this to reproduce! The clitellum is always closer to the head (the anterior) of the worm, and just looks like a band. Obviously on the other end of the worm is it's anus (the exterior). Easy mistake to make I guess. I mean, I ALWAYS mistake peoples faces with their anuses! 

Worms are actually both male and female. To reproduce, all that happens is two worms clitellum touch. That's it! Nothing more to it. After that happens,  cocoons are formed on the worms clitellum and  are fertilised. The cocoons should be a yellowish colour. When they hatch, baby worms are born! These should be white/see through.

Worms don't actually breathe like us through their mouths, but they breathe through their skin! This way, the air goes right into their blood stream and is instantly accessible. For the air to pass through properly, the worm needs to be constantly moisturised.
