The Pit Bull. Once America's sweetheart dog, is now America's most feared dog. BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) has not helped to recover this amazing breed to the love it once had from America. If you do not know what BSL is look below, it will explain. If you already know, continue reading.

Breed Specific Legislation-
"Usually, BSL prohibits breeding or importing the canines in question, with the goal of letting all dogs of the specified type eventually die out through natural attrition. Existing dogs must be muzzled whenever they are out in public. Sometimes their collars must be specific colors, and their homes or yards must display "Beware, Dangerous Dog" signs, without regard to whether the animal in question poses any actual threat."

"The term refers to any law designed to regulate or outlaw specific breeds or types of dogs. These laws have been passed in places ranging from small towns to entire countries. The most commonly affected dogs include pit bull types, Rottweilers, GSDs, Dobermans, Chows and occasionally some or all Mastiff types."

Many people will try to convince you that Pit Bulls are "vicious" or "mean" dogs. There is no "bad" dog, just bad owners. The American Temperament Test Society back in 2008 proved that Pit Bulls have a much better temperament than most popular "family dogs". They scored an average of 85% whereas the average is 77%. Many people who attempt to convince you that Pit Bulls are vicious fail to tell you that Pit Bulls are commonly used as Search and Rescue dogs and Therapy dogs.

Despite popular belief, most Pit Bulls were never human aggressive. Back when they began breeding Pit Bulls for fighting, they always made sure they were never human aggressive and never bit the people trying to separate the dogs and treat any injuries. So any Pit Bull that bit or attacked the human was immediately killed and never bred. Pit Bulls are known to be excellent family dogs because they are so great with children and have such high tolerance of pain. So they will not snap at a baby if it pulls it's tail or hits him.

BSL has been proved that it is completely ineffective, and has not lowered any of the dog bites/attacks.

Originating in England they were being bred to fight because they had outlawed "baiting". They had bred the dogs to become more agile and smaller as their ancestor, the Bulldog, was very large. They trained the Pit Bulls to be more aggressive and gave them a higher "prey drive".

Once moved to the US in the 19th century, these dogs were excellent cattle dogs and "catch dogs" for catching pigs. These dogs were different from their ancestors, being used as farm dogs rather than fighting dogs. The American Pit Bull Terrier is what they named the breed of dog. This is a mix of the English and Irish versions of the Pit Bull.
Some, not ALL, were still used as fighting dogs. The majority of them were used as hunters, herders, guardians and friends.

Not surprisingly when the American Kennel Club had first formed, they refused to recognize Pit Bulls because of their fighting background.
However, finally, in the 1930's they were finally accepted into the AKC under the name Staffordshire Terrier. Despite the name difference, they are basically the same breed of dog. In the 1970s, the AKC Staffordshire was split into the English and American Staffordshire, based primarily on size differences, with the larger American Staffordshire Terrier being closer to traditional pit bull conformation.

A popular story of Sgt. Stubby, a Pit Bull, was the first dog decorated with medals by the armed forces. "In the first world war, Sgt. Stubby not only survived being twice wounded in combat, but captured a German spy and saved his entire platoon from a poison gas attack."

Back then, very, very small percentage of all Pit Bulls ACTUALLY fought.

However, by the 1980's any heroism known by Pit Bulls was forgotten and the myth that they are dangerous dog fighters had took hold.

Despite a few "bad apples" out there they were trained to be fighting dogs, Pit Bulls are still proving to be a great, loving family dog.
Many believe that this false rumor of this dog breed being "dangerous" had originated by the infamous "Michael Vick".

With lots of love, early socialization, patience and care Pit Bulls prove to be outstandingly smart, sweet, friendly dogs that just wanna play and love. Pit Bulls are very loyal to their owners and will do anything for them, even fight. There is NO bad dog breed, just stupid owners who don't know how to train their dogs. If you don't know how to treat or raise a dog properly, don't get one. We are their masters, we make them who they are today. Blame the deed, not the breed. They have done nothing wrong, just what their owner has taught them what is right.
