This was it! I was finally at the Violet City gym leader! Today, I was going to take my first step at changing the Pokemon trainer community forever.
Hi, I'm Star, and I just became a Pokemon trainer. My goal is simple: To establish that Pokemon trainers are not bad people who pit animals against each other to the death. Battles aren't about strength and death, but about trust between trainers and their Pokemon. And here I was, attempting to fulfill my goal.
The road here was tough, and I can only imagine what the next 7 badges would be like. I shut the thought down, telling myself I'd get to that bridge when I got to it. Anyways, since Pokemon trainers were so ridiculed and hated for killing such adorable creatures, there was a rule to being a trainer: You may only catch the first Pokemon you see in a new area. This made things much harder, but I was determined to get my message out to the world.
"So, your name is Star, correct?" Falkner, the leader of the Violet City gym asked me.
"That's me. I'm sorry I have to do this, but your Pokemon die today." I announced.
"That's what you think. Go, Pidgey!" Falker threw his Pokeball. It bounced, and released with a brilliant light, his Pidgey. I knew Pidgey a weak Pokemon, and I knew how to deal with it. "Go, Cerise!" I threw my own Pokeball, releasing my Hoothoot, Cerise. "Cerise, use Hypnosis!" I commanded. Cerise immediately responded, psychic wave of sleepiness toward Pidgey. The Pidgey, however, was faster than the wave of psychic energy.
"Pidgey, use Tackle." Falkner announced. He didn't seem too excited about the battle. I guessed he was tired of killing terrible Trainers Pokemon, crushing their dreams along with it. The Pidgey landed hard on Cerise, but she managed to shake off the blow. "Come on, Cerise, use Hypnosis!" Cerise released yet another psychic wave of sleepiness, taking advantage of Pidgey trying to regain balance after tackling her. The wave hit spot on, and Pidgey immediatly fell in to a deep sleep.
"Cerise, use Peck!" Cerise stabbed the Pidgey with her sharp beak. Pidgey suddenly stirred. Sleep wouldn't last much longer. "Come on, Pidgey, wake up!" Falkner yelled. He obviously didn't expect things to turn bad so quickly. "Cerise, use Peck again!" Cerise, again, jabbed Cerise with a sharp beak. The Pidgey suddenly rose to his feet, ready to take on Cerise again. "Alright, Pidgey, use Tackle!" Pidgey flew high in to the air and tackled Cerise hard. Cerise again, shook off the blow rather easily. Hoothoot had naturally high defenses.
"Cerise, use Hypnosis again!" Cerise used Hypnosis once again, hitting the Pidgey, causing him to pass out immediately. "Oh no... Come on, Pidgey, wake up!" Falkner yelled. He knew his Pidgey's time was short. "Cerise, Peck it again!" Cerise pounced on the Pidgey, gripping him hard with her claws. She brought down her beak hard. Pidgey looked bad. "Cerise, Peck it one more time!" Cerise brought down her beak again, twice as hard, piercing the Pidgey right in the heart. The Pidgey drifted from sleep to death.
Falkner stumbled. He knew he had lost. I could see the fear in his eyes. Cerise, however, looked like she could go another round with Falkner. Falkner cleared his throat, and reached for his second, and last Pokeball. "Go, Pidgeotto...!" Falkner managed to croak out. He was fighting back tears. I knew he loved his Pidgey, but he took him for granted until know. He didn't know what he had until it was gone. I shook my head as his Pidgeotto entered the battlefield. "Alright, Cerise, come back." I held my Pokeball, a red light engulfing Cerise, returning her to the Pokeball. "Come on out, Geos!" I decided to let my beloved Geos end the battle. I loved Geos, more than any other Pokemon on my team. I knew that Geos would get the job done quickly. I threw my Pokeball, releasing Geos. Geos was excited to be able to battle finally, stretching his stubby arms out.
"Alright, Pidgeotto..." Falkner paused for a moment. "Use Tackle!" Pidgeotto flapped his wings, sending himself flying in to the air. He dive bombed toward Geos, hitting him square in the chest. Geos flew backwards, and hit the ground hard. Geos got up, ready to face the Pidgeotto. "Use Scratch, Geos!" Geos lunged for the Pidgeotto's face, and slashed with his sharp claws. The Pidgeotto barely flinched. Oh no... I thought to myself. Maybe Geos cant do this...
"Pidgeotto, use Tackle!" The Pidgeotto, again, tackled Geos with astonishing force. Geos didn't look too hot. "Geos, hang in there! Use Scratch!" Geos lunged, rather sluggish this time, toward the Pidgeotto, slicing it right in the face. The Pidgeotto was still un-phased by the attempt.
"Geos, get back here!" Geos ran toward me, a little confused. I located Geos' wounds, and sprayed them with a potion. Geos winced against the sting of the medicine, but he looked ready for battle again. "Pidgeotto, use Tackle!" Falkner commanded once again. Falkner's tone was more excited, suggesting that he thought he had a chance at winning. Too bad for him, he was wrong. Totodile was sent flying again, and slowly rose to his feet.
"Pidgeotto, Tackle once more!" Pidgeotto tackled Geos. Geos rose sluggishly, gasping for air. "Geos, Water Gun!" Geos sprayed a strong torrent of water at the Pidgeotto. It knocked Pidgeotto back a solid distance, but nothing too major, as usual. Maybe this Pidgeotto wasn't something to scoff at after all.
I raised my Pokeball, afraid of losing Geos. A red light captured and returned Geos to his Pokeball. "Go, Zaneca!" Zaneca, my Spearow, appeared on to the battlefield, ready to end things. The battle had gone for far too long now. "Pidgeotto, use Tackle!" Pidgeotto tackled Zaneca. Zaneca was unready for the sudden blow, and he got hit hard. He could take another, but only one more.
"Zaneca, use-" I started. "TACKLE!" Falkner yelled. The Pidgeotto suddendly flew toward Zaneca, tackling him with epic force. Zaneca stumbled backwards until he landed silently at my feet, dead. I gasped. How had... There was... I thought to myself. I turned my head away, ashamed to have sent such an innocent Pokemon into this dispute. I had just caught Zaneca. I fought back tears as I returned him to his Pokeball. "Alright Cerise. End it." I sent out Cerise. She appeared on the battlefield once more, determined to end the battle.
"Pidgeotto, use Roost!" Pidgeotto tucked his feet in under him, resting off the little damage Geos caused him earlier in battle. I smirked, seeing an opening for Cerise's hypnosis. However, as if reading my mind, Cerise already acted, sending her signature psychic wave of sleepiness toward the Pidgeotto, hitting dead on. The Pidgeotto slumped over, sleeping. "That'll teach you to loaf around..." I mumbled.
"Cerise, use Peck!" I yelled, ready to avenge the innocent Zaneca. Cerise hopped on Pidgeotto, digging her sharp claws in to soft feathers and skin. She brought down her beak upon Pidgeotto's head. Pidgeotto still slept softly. "Cerise, again!" Cerise pecked once more. Pidgeotto jumped, feeling the pain of the peck, but staying asleep.
"CERISE, PECK ONE MORE TIME!" I yelled, my eyes misty. Cerise pecked, and pecked, and pecked, until Pidgeotto was no more than a corpse. Falkner gasped. Never before had he seen such ferocity from such a trainer. My face felt wet. I reached a hand up, and sure enough, I had cried over my loss for Zaneca. Falkner fell to his knees, bowing his head in shame. I couldn't help blaming him. I walked over to his knelt figure. I reached a hand out, wanting my deserved badge, and getting out of there. Falkner silenty reached in to his pocket, and handed me the piece of metal. I opened my badge case and placed it gently inside. "Told you..." I whispered.

I solemnly deposited Zaneca in to my Box. The battle, as all gym battles were, was aired on TV. Mother would've seen the fight, and would lay Zaneca in the river near our house back in New Bark Town. "I'm sorry, Zaneca..." I whispered. I sat down on one of the Pokemon Center chairs. I opened my badge case, and glared at the badge. It was now not my first step to becoming the Pokemon Champion, but a token to remember Zaneca's death. I slammed the case shut and returned it to my bag. I had comitted myself, and I wouldn't stop until my message was conveyed.
