The whole class screams and students start running out of the classroom. April gets up and takes my hand. “Come on, Zen!â€
I follow her out quickly. We can hear implanters running after students as they take their chipping devices out. Screams fill the hallway.
April’s hand suddenly slips away from mine. An implanter that was a woman had grabbed her and pinned her arms behind her back, so she was unable to move.
“April! No!†I yell, and try to set her free from the Implanter’s grip.
“Get lost, b*tch.†The female implanter slaps me on the face.
I feel tears streaming down my face as I run as fast as I can away from the Implanter. I spot a window inside an empty classroom, and I open it and jump out.
I run outside, behind the school.
I run so fast that my lungs burn.
Ever had that feeling? I bet you have. It felt familiar. Then I remember; my dream.
The Implanter was right behind me, shooting bullets at me. I dodged all of them. My heart was beating faster and faster. All Implanter’s guns have dangerous and deadly bullets that are sharp and meant to get stuck inside of you.
I looked at the sky.
There was no choice.
I took off my jacket, putting it in my book bag. I back up about 8 feet, run, and launch myself into the air, snapping out my wings.
When I was about 20 feet into the air, I couldn't help looking back and seeing the hilarious look on the astonished Implanter's face.
I rose up higher into the air, hopefully not visible to the city below me.
I flew off towards home, still panicking.
Was my mom safe? Had the rest of the Implanters found her?
Who knows?
When I get inside my house,
about 6 minutes later, my question was answered.
I folded in my wings, put my jacket back on, and ran upstairs to my mom's room.
“Zennia?†My mom's voice came out from behind the door.
“Yes, It's me,†I say, opening her door.
“Why are you home? Aren't you supposed to be at school?†She asks, giving me a questionable look.
“Well... About that...†My voice trails off. I don't want to tell her about my wings, about the Implanter at school. But I don't have a lot of choices here, so... here we go, folks.
“Implanters came to our school. One of them took April... I went outside, but one of them shot bullets at me. Just like those dreams I keep having.â€
“How did you escape?†She asks.
I sigh. “Mom, can you keep a secret?â€
“Yeah.â€
Okay. Here goes nothing.
I take off my jacket, unfold my wings, and stretch them out across the room. 10 feet of feathers.
My mom's eyes widen.
“You... You have wings?†Mom says.
“I guess so. Wanna see them work?†I ask her.
“Yeah! Most definitely!†She says excitedly.
“Alright, follow me!†We go downstairs, out of the house, into our spacious backyard surrounded by a big cluster of trees.
I back up, start running, and go up into the air, moving my wings powerfully.
Then, after a few minutes, I land, folding in my wings and put my jacket back on.
“That was amazing!†Mom says, giving me a high five.
“Thanks mom!†I said, smiling.
We walk back into our house, talking about my wings.

I hope everyone at school is safe.
