Hello there, and welcome to my review of honestly my favourite game of all time.
Undertale is an indie-game made by Toby Fox, with additional help from Temmie Chang. The game was made possible due to the insane amount of money it made from it's kickstarter page.
The story is set in the year 201X, after a long battle between humans and monsters; monsters lost and were banished to the underground, where they are left powerless. Until one day a human falls down Mount Ebott into the underground.
You play as the human; named Frisk.
Immediately as you move out of the main part of the underground you fall down onto, you meet a Flower; named Flowey. He introduces you to the underground and reminds you on how in the world he believes it's "kill or be killed." Before you are killed, Toriel (Goat Mom) saves you and from this point you have 3 different paths you can take
Neutral In this route you play the game as you go, either sparing or killing whoever you choose, through this route you cannot unlock the true ending which you can achieve. This is only the basic route and the route with the least story.
True Pacifist This route is where you spare every monster, and kill none of them, by doing this you can get to the true ending. The main difference between this and Genocide run, is there are different bosses and dialogue, this route is easier than Genocide, but takes longer to progress through the story.
Genocide In the Genocide run you must brutally seek out every monster in the underground and murder them. By doing this you become a monster and the bosses are harder. Some of the bosses that appear in Pacifist don't in the Genocide run, but new ones are also implemented in the Genocide run. This run is shorter story wise as there is less dialogue, but it takes longer to hunt down all the monsters and kill them.
The story is amazing; with a mix of both humorous and emotional moments, the game can bring you to tears, the story isn't over complicated and is amazing to experience, I won't spoil anything about the story or non main characters, but I will say, if you take the genocide run, you are going to have a bad time. Not only is the story the most amazing part about Undertale. Two things that stick out besides the story are:
1. The Music Undertale features some of the most amazing music I have heard from a video game, every track is amazing and they all compete with each other so well. I can not honestly name my favourite track, due to the fact after listening to other amazing tracks in the soundtrack, I feel the same about all of them. The music is amazing overall and will have you re-listening to each track constantly here's the playlist to the OST
2. The Characters Undertale features some of the most charming characters in gaming history, each character is charming in their own ways.
Here's a brief on (most) of the characters:
Toriel - The First Character you meet in the game, she assists you through the tutorial of the game and is a kind-hearted motherly figure.
Sans - A joker, likes to pull pranks and jokes on others around him, deeply cares for his brother.
Papyrus - The dimwitted brother of Sans, he loves spaghetti and puzzles, he wants to become a member of the royal guard and work with the leader Undyne. He tries to prove he's worthy by trying to capture the human.
Undyne - Leader of the royal guard, believes all humans are bad and she tries to kill you on several occasions, the reasons are to steal your soul to give it to Asgore.
Alphys - The royal scientist, loves to watch anime and has a crush on Undyne, she assists you through the Hotlands area and helps you fight against Mettaton, one of her creations.
Mettaton - Killer robot, with a fabulous TV show, wants to expand their show to the human world and become more noticed
Asgore - The king of the underground, gives hope to the monsters and seeks revenge on the humans.
REMEMBER EACH CHARACTER HAS A DIFFERENT WAY TO BE SPARED
Now moving on to the graphics, as you may have noticed the graphics aren't the best and are ugly to look at in some of the plain areas such as the Ruins.
But areas like Waterfall are stunning
The graphics aren't that big of a deal in the game though, as the game is about the story, not how stunning the landscapes look.
Finally I will talk about the battle system:
In Undertale there is a very unique battle system with 4 different options you can take:
FIGHT Fighting allows the player to kill the enemy, this has to be used all the way through Genocide run and should not be used if you are trying to complete the True Pacifist run, because simply attacking the enemy does not mean that they will be easier to spare.
ACT Acting gives the player the ability to talk to the opposing foe and will make the enemy able to be spared, this has to be used throughout True Pacifist to be able to unlock the true ending.
ITEM Item is the obvious, the different items you pick up throughout your journey, such as weapons and healing items, for example the stick can be used on the dog enemies and Papyrus.
MERCY Mercy is where you can spare the enemy once you have talked to them enough, in this menu you can also flee from the battle, this will be useful in certain a certain boss fight and for dodging random encounters.
Remember if you are trying to complete True Pacifist never FIGHT an enemy, and in Genocide never SPARE an enemy.
Overall Undertale is the best game of 2015, no doubts, there is so much more to the story than what is shown on the outer surface, the reason I didn't want to spoil anything because it's not a game; it's an experience.
I went into Undertale expecting to hate it, due to the cancerous fandom; but due to the fact I hadn't had anything spoiled due to me avoiding it, I had a better experience with the game!
Tem out of Tem, nice xD I honestly am in love with this game. Anyone who does Genocide is offically heartless :3 Jk, but I honestly think everyone should give this game a try
