We had eaten all our wings, and let me tell you, they were delicious. We found a nice forest to settle down and rest in. I felt like I hadn't had food in ages. But I think those wings did something to our growth spurt.
I woke up to my stomach growling. Again. But for some reason I had a sharp pain in my back. Probably because I was sleeping on my back and it gets sore when I lay on it. I hear Zeke sit up and groan, stretching his back.
"What's up?" I ask looking, into his pale blue eyes. His face was dirty and his eyes were tired.
"My back... Freaking... Hurts..." He moaned and stood up. I stretch, turning my waist to one side, then the other. Ahh, that's better. Then I hear a gasp. I glance at Scruff and Glaine, who are still asleep. Wasn't them.
"What, Zeke?" I asked him. He had a shocked look on his face. I stifle a laugh and raise an eyebrow at him.
"Your wings..." His voice trailed off. Wait! Now I know why my back hurts. I have extra muscles, and well, they're my full grown wings. I slowly extend them, looking over my shoulder. They're beautiful! Black glistening feathers with white streaks and brown at the edges. Then Zeke extends his and well, they're more beautiful than mine. They are light brown with white speckles all over them.
"Should we give em' a spin?" He asks, giving me a small grin. I nod, and start to run, tucking in my wings and jump, while snapping them back out. I ended up catching the wind, but unfortunately, I forgot we were under trees, and my head hit a branch. I wince, dropping like a rock. But then Zeke catches me. I look up at Zeke, and his eyes are filled with laughter. And I laugh along with him. Glaine and Scruff quietly stir. They both rub their eyes sleepily. I turn my gaze back to Zeke, and I feel my cheeks heating up. He carefully puts me down.
"This is going to be a lot harder than we thought, huh?" He said with a slight grimace. I narrowed my eyes. Glaine and Scruff almost have the same color of wings. Glaine's are bright white, and Scruffs have the smallest hint of red at the edges, but all white.
"You're on. Come on guys, whoever's first to be airborne gets to teach the others." I say with a snarl, already Running off. I think I can do this, I learned some of this stuff from my favorite book series, Maximum Ride. I take a good jump, and unfurl my wings. This time I'm careful to look up to where I'm going, and I swerve to avoid a branch before rising above the forest. I did it! I work my wings up and down, laughing, even though my laughs are seized away by the wind. I quickly aim myself downward, and see the others, working their way up to where I am. They had actually managed to fly! Wow. I wait for them above.
"Race to the bottom!" I yell, tucking in my wings a bit while aiming downward, doing a dive bomb. The wind whistling in my ears blew back my hair, and I smiled as I went through the treetops and quickly snapped out my wings to stop, and I flapped them, making a cruddy landing. About 5 seconds later, I saw a blob of brown and blue, and then next second I was pushing Zeke off my back, scowling. Glaine lands and ends up tripping over Zeke, and Scruff does and automatic face-plant in the dirt. We laugh as he spits dirt out of his mouth.
All I knew was that flying was so, so fun. Max was right!
