The game is a space MMO. So you start off by choosing a name, a profession, a ship. The bulk of gameplay is focused on traveling to different areas and planets to complete missions, mainly to accumulate credits which are used for ship upgrades. Interaction via chatting ship-to-ship is possible, but not common.
The DSi version is touchscreen-based and somewhat more limited than the motion-controlled Wii version.
