In the hopes that one day HB Online will run adequately enough so the little things can be addressed one at a time, I'd like to try to compile a list of the minor problems both versions of the game may experience. Major issues like mission rewards and hailing are well established and do not apply, likewise for not being able to log in or the entire game not loading up. Include things such as graphical blips, interface oversights, improper messages, and false readouts. Details will be helpful.
Lite:
- Buttons that open selection boxes (trade, shipyard, missions) spill their content past the bottom edge of the game. There used to be scrollbars, not sure why they were removed.
- When mining resources, the cargo count can be inaccurate. For my ship, it would show 5/6 cargo while actually being 6/6 cargo. Refreshing the page shows correct value.
Semi-conflicted on calling this one minor. While it probably will not create problems, room for mischief is there. Via url, any player can assume the identity of another player. Out of respect, I did not spend time testing how far the character usage could go. What I do know is that your money and stats are immutable, hailing is possible between characters, and "idle" characters briefly remain visible. The latter is true under normal circumstances, but knowing this serves to prove the system can tell no different.
Lite: When dropping cargo, sometimes the page reorients itself and sometimes it does not. On DSi, the page must be scrolled down to access the buttons for dropping cargo. Upon dropping, it may jump back to the vertical position it was set at in order to accomodate DSi. Jumping back up is supposed to slightly automate a process, saving a second of scrolling. The condition is probably pretty simple, though even if I knew offhand, there seems to be no good explanation for why different cargo dumps may or may not be readjusting the page.
In attempting to figure out the basis of cargo drop irregularity, 50 trials were conducted. These were "natural" in that they exhibit the properties of a naturally filling and emptying 6-capacity hold. Thus no categories were singled out, and trial quantity decreases as drop load is increased. Also, tests for 6 were not performed.
It is likely that the above information is largely inconclusive. During stretches, it will seem like a particular dump value is predisposed to having either success or failure. But conducting further trials results in a return to the mean. Approximately two-thirds of the time, it will go, and that is that. The second stat seems only to prove the rhythmic nature of the server which indiscriminately affects various game functions.
[Lite] There is an occasional visual "bug" with the animated backdrop flashing white for a split second before recovering. It doesn't happen a lot for me, although two instances close together brought it to my attention. One was a vertical position jump (noted above), and the other was a normal planet departure. The symptom is simply the bright grey background leaking from behind where the starry animation is supposed to be. The cause is probably the Opera browser lagging to show elements, which can also happen on more capable desktop browsers.
[Lite] Following up on the previous post. The whiteout showed its face again, this time very apparent with the ship clearly superimposed over the body (an asteroid). This lingers for about 3 seconds before the departure animation begins. When the destination is reached, I was surprised to see it whiteout again, with the same asteroid as before (!). The image reverts quickly to the correct destination. Interesting is that point A and point B were in totally different sectors. This might demonstrate how all graphics resources are preloaded, rather than on-demand. If true, could the engine be made more efficient in that respect?
[Lite] Upon hailing John Crichton, the console stalled, then printed out his hail reply 4 times. As far as I am aware, the hail button was only tapped once. A typical hail request does hesitate a moment before getting a response, though they never multiplied for me before. This error can probably be chalked up to browser memory making scripts go haywire.
[Lite] Accepted a mission normally, chose to return to my character selection page via the browser's back button, reclicked my character, and the mission is gone from My Info. Missions should stay active until they are completed. I'll have to look into this one to determine how minor/major the glitch is.
[Lite] There is also an inadequacy where progressing to another page from the game page, then returning results in missing pieces of the interface. Really the cause is probably just memory as with various other problems, but still something not to be overlooked. This game's "clunkiness" can certainly be slimmed down.
[Lite] I have noticed that while en route to a destination and I lose my internet connection, the starry background is gone and it is just black. Even after reconnecting, the symptom lingers.
