US Federal Government Shutdown

Unfortunately, the 27th Amendment protects members of Congress from being docked their pay. Several members are either donating their paychecks back to the Treasury or to a charity, during the shutdown, at least.

The Federal government is the nation's largest employer, and 57% of the employees are considered "non-essential". Those are both major problems. The key word in the government structure is "Federal", which means the government is supposed to be centrally lean with most governing left to the states.

As for the employees: Sure one can't help but feel bad for them, since many are just trying o feed their families. Yet, they did take jobs with the government, which can be very volitile (unless you are part of someone's inner circle). Yet, take the end of World War II as an example: When hundreds of thousands of troops were returning home in 1945, there was the worry that the private sector would be able to handle such an influx of potential employees. The actual result was that the private sector exploded in size, while the government shrunk. The economy had very little trouble, and the markets did not implode.

I see this partial shutdown as an eye opener to government employees to keep the resumès up-to-date for potential private sector work. For example, one of Samantha's relatives was furloughed as NASA. Just in the past few years, there has been an explosion of private sector space research at companies like Scaled Composites, Space X, Armadillo Aerospace, and many more. Maybe he could apply to one of those companies and be on the forefront of new exploration, instead of an agency that has passed its glory days.

You must have no kept up with the news. Before the shutdown was even over, Congress voted to provide back pay to all its employees when the partial (about 13%) shutdown would conclude.

Government employees are paid on the 15th of the month and the last day of the month, meaning they were paid the day before the shutdown and had the next pay delayed a couple days. As has always happened in this nation, charities and private companies stepped in. For example, USAA bank loaned all government employees the amounts their paychecks would have been - at no interest - for the duration of the shutdown. Many charities offered to provide furloughed pay to government employees, as well.

If 53% of Federal employees are considered "non-essential", then why do they even have jobs in the Federal government? Imagine the private sector economic boom the US would experience if all of these Federal employees suddenly jumped into the private sector like what happened after World War II when the troops came home. New companies sprung up, more jobs were created, and unemployment stayed low.

Also, keep in mind that this shutdown happened exactly as it should have happened. This was a great example of checks-and-balances set forth in the US Constitution. It prevents totalitarian control of the nation. In this case, two sides disagreed on the fiscal legislation, and it created a bottleneck in its passage. It also highlights a problem with the current leadership in both house and in the presidency - not because of their inability to quickly reach an agreement - but because they all waited until last minute to even come up with legislation that should really have been drafted well in advance.

Now, if you noticed in the news, this whole affair was sensationalized beyond any level of reality. Very little reported was factual. It was all just a blame game that helped various politicians fund raise of their own actions.

If this was a "government shutdown", then why were more park police brought in (and even paid overtime) to barricade open-air parks that normally have no police during visitors' hours? Why were they instructed by someone in there White House to "make it as painful as you can" on private property that bordered parks or on evicted homeowners that lived within parks? This whole aspect of the event was 100% political and childish.

The actual partial shutdown was how it should have happened, and the extra effects were purely vengeful. Was anyone hurt by this whole event? In the short-term, maybe a couple days.Was anyone hurt in the long-term? I seriously doubt that.

I don't know much about government, but I think we need one to carry on as a country. Because, what are we supposed to do without a government?
