Square Soft was just a tiny development company in the late 1980s, on the verge of bankruptcy. One of the employees (not sure the title) came up with an idea for making a role playing game on the NES set in a fantasy world. The executive in charge of green-lighting new games said to go for it, but they hadn't thought of a title yet. The man pitching the game came up with "Final Fantasy" as a joke. He said that it would probably be the final game Square Soft would make before closing its doors. Little did they know the success it would bring.
