It's a sub-variable. Almost like an array.
Infact, it's the opposite of a superglobal. Or sometimes it's used for assigning a function to a variable.
These are just based on what I have used it for.
I know my apprehensions might never be allayed. And so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written...
