I feel like this could be an additional private setting if the user chooses to do so.

Instead of user statuses being influenced by where they visit, perhaps the user should be able to check a box in their user settings to manually type a presence. This way, they hide what they're doing while... not hiding.

I'm just addressing privacy concerns.

And there's also that sweet, sweet, freedom of choice. It has to be moderated, though. Of cours.e

I was thinking some kind of character filter on the site and then validation on the backend.

Also, good point with the indication that it's custom. Maybe something like a star would suffice, idk

If this were the case, I would prefer it have some automatic indication that it's custom, that way people can't lie about their stauses (ex. putting a symbol at the beginning).

Also, fixing statuses being able to break friend activities would be necessary (see /member/?id=6938,
never brought this up before because usernames are more limited now) or just limiting to safe characters.
