Regarding your help desk, to friend people, you click on their username and near the top of the screen, it should say:

Friend Request

You click request, and wait for them to accept it.

To chat with people, either comment on their profile, or get invited to groups, which you may want to ask @dcthegamr to do for you, as he has quite a few.
