Hey guys, Smalls here wanting to rant about something. Something that has been itching me for a while.
What does a normal DSi site consist of?
Status?
Forums?
Blogs?
Messages?
Points?
It's becoming a standard now. Too much of a standard to say the least. Those are always the core features, which sometimes wind up being the only features most of the time. It's starting to over-saturate the DSi webspace.
I know I followed this route with DSiTabs/net and G/net, but that was when there were far less community sites around... Such as there being only 3 core sites: DSiPaint, DSiCade, and G/net. This was before DSiHub became popular.
It's time to stop this. I know the 3DS is on the edge of release, but let's face it... DSi sites will still be around for a long time.
It's cool to have a website with all of those features, but remember... There are dozens more with the same features with a good solid userbase. That userbase won't magically switch over.
Make a website, but focus in on a feature that will blow away everybody else's. That alone will draw in more users, not the fact that you have a status page and a messaging system.
So this is out to those who are looking into making a website, be genuine, not a copycat.
Exactly. People should copy less. T2B2O, you (Tim), Turtle153, Danny, Rick, etc, are the only truly creative, awesome DSi site creators. OOh, and LunchMeats101 and TWR. But TWR is gone.
@craig Hm, since Protistra and I are the only Hub Mods to post so far, I'd say you're wrong. And how were those the only good things it had? It was quite good with QuickNotes and the oroginal App Store as well.
Sure, my point of view isn't exactly objective, but that's like saying the only good feature Paint has is [insert here], when that isn't true.
1. Larger websites get repeatedly shut down for redesigns, alienating the userbase during the process. Why not just leave the website active and change it piece by piece?
2. Smaller websites are quickly set up with free mobile tools or free bulletin board tools. This requires an account signup to see anything at all, in many cases. It also means that the owner spends maybe an hour on an entire website and plugs it to other people as this great new place to hangout. This oversaturation just leads to the lack of interest in any smaller websites.
It takes a great deal of time and work to build a full-blown website. Such a website cannot be made with free olivine and tools. It takes extensive studying various programming languages and technologies.
If you spend considerable time on a website, and it never becomes popular, just use what you learned, and make another one. I've made so many websites in the past that get no more than a few visitors per day and would have never dreamt of creating on that gets 6000 per day.
I disagree, Bob. It's a classic, efficient formula. We have 2 Admins, and a report function. Why update the chat? And, it's [near] impossible, since TWR hasn't been on in... 11 months.
@protistra Heh, I think as a fellow Mod, you might agree that too much was done and happened in a short span of time near Hub's end:
-Too many Mods added (maybe)
-Some Admin conflict it seemed
-Some features removed for various reasons
Eh, hopefully 3DSHub will do well. I think Harlan should hire new a new staff (mostly).
Anyway, this blog has me motivated to find that "killer app", although that might already exist in paintings/QuickNotes.
DSiPaint and DSiCade are the only two I've been a part of, and they're both pretty solid. For example, DSiPaint has Saviis, Painting, and Blogs. DSiCade has plenty of games, good users, and a ban-time of 30 days to 3 months. oFTo
