A good while back, I was in one of the chatrooms, chatting, as one does. It just happened that the subject of bisexuality came up. I happily talked about this in a respectful way, in fact I was defending the right to have one's own sexual preference. T'was all calm and peaceful, until a noob logged in.
At the first sign of me saying "bisexual," she jumped at my throat. "Shut up Epic," she said, "Its wrong." In the course of the conversation I had not once said one mean thing about gays or the like, and thus defended my right to free speech. Soon I had recieved a ban for not shutting up. While I still think I was not in the wrong, I will rant no further on that particular occasion. What's done is done, this is not that petty a blog, and I am not that petty a person. This blog, however, is most definitely related to it.
I'm not going to give you the normal rant, about peace, stopping discrimination and "can't we all just get along?" because that's been done before, and if you're anything like me, you're getting tired of it.
Let me first give a definition of "prejudice," plucked from the quagmire of the internet by google define:
"Prejudice-noun-
Preconcieved opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience."
There was one bit she said, which made me think quite a bit. Can you guess?
It was "It's wrong."
Exposure to mass paranoia over prejudice has conditioned this person to believe that if bisexuality is being discussed, it could only possibly be in a prejudical way, and so she jumped to the automatic response. This is an issue I have often been annoyed by, and I deliberately speak freely about "taboo" subjects which are open to false interpretation.
Let me tell you what prejudice ISN'T.
-Saying "black"
-Saying "bisexual," or "homosexual"
-Talking about sexual orientations
-Talking about racial backgrounds, ethnicities, etc...
Listen up people! It's not racism/sexism/whatever, until SOMEBODY IS DISCRIMINATING SOMEONE ELSE. Remember that!
Slightly off topic but once I was walking down the halls at my school and some idiot behind me was saying to his friend "MAN, I HATE ASIANS!". When I turned around he started saying "Man, I love Asians."
That's because it's spelt "crunchy". And maybe it let you say XxXEmoN00bXxX because since it started with an uppercase letter it thinks it's a name or something :S
If that's not how your spellcheck works.. then.. it's just.. awesome.
Anyway, I'm glad you made this Blog. Even though I hate chatrooms these days, I'm aware of situations like these, when I lurk. As long as one doesn't use a racial slur, or orientaion slur, fine by me, talk about the subject, respectfully. Debate me on it, if you think it's wrong, Mr.
XxXEmoN00bXxX.
[somehow, Mr. XxXEmoN00bXxX is not a 'mis-spelled' word in my spell-checker, XD]
accepted, reason: I think you make a good point. Too many people are afraid to bring up the subject. Even if they have an innocent question, simply because they're afraid of being accused of homphobia, racism, predjudice, etc. I want people to ask me (appropriate) questions. It's better then being misinformed, as much of todays generation seems to be.
