How often do you stereotype someone? Stop and think about it. Everyone has done it. Stereotyping is just a fancy way of saying judge a person based on what others believe. While some stereotypes are funny, like how Asians are good at math and love rice, others can be seen as very insulting.
For example, at my school, there is a Middle Eastern boy. Every day, he is faced with people calling him a terrorist and asking if he's going to blow up the school. How do you think he feels, being judged based on his race? There are also several Hispanics at my school. I once overheard a boy asking one of the Hispanics if they were even herelegally, if they jumped the fence, if they had a green card, etc. On a personal note, I have faced stereotyping myself. My family is from Germany, and I was once called a Nazi by someone I hardly knew when he asked where I was from. Based on the country I am from, he instantly judged me and labeled me as a Nazi. After this incident, I tried my hardest to stop stereotyping.
Stereotyping may never go away. There is, however, a way you can help to try to stop it. Think before you speak. Think, "If I say this, will this person feel judged or discriminated against?" Would you like to be judged based on your race, orientation, hair color, etc.? Not all blondes are dumb, and not all African-Americans are good at basketball. Get to know the person before judging them. Don't decide who you try to make friends with based on the outside. The inside is what counts. Whatever you do, don't judge a book by its cover.
all french ppl are beray wearing romantics x3
*agrees with ram*
no one makes jokes seriously-there is only one blonde person that i know that goes along with the blonde steriotype. i hardly know anyone that follows steriotypes seriously.....
Hundreds times a day do my friends make Jew jokes. The throw of a penny, the accountant expectations, keepahs("Jew hats"), you name it. I don't care. Why? Because, I know they are all joking. No one has ever made a serious Nazi Vs. Jew joke. I also joke around with them also. Even the Gas Chamber jokes don't startle me. Ive heard them all.
Stereotyping will never go away so long as the human race is stuck in this "no-natural-selection" period.
It is a natural reaction to meeting someone new. When we were cavemen it would have been used to judge how likely it seemed that another person would attack you, or similar things. It's just manifested differently nowadays.
Stereotype: a paranoid version of racism.
Like racism, it is used as an excuse to get court money.
Also, one who accuses another for stereotype lacks a backbone to shutup and laugh at themselves every once in a while.
Seriously, if people these days learned to laugh it out instead of fussing like a Crybaby, these words wouldn't exist (they technically don't. It's only a cry for attention).
-sigh- I guess people have nothing better to do -.-
I'll contribute. Another Stereotype is that all Christians are Bible-Nuts, and all Atheists are lonely miscreants. Now, really, only a portion of Christians are Bible-Nuts, while only a small amount of us Atheists, mostly the early ones, are lonely miscreants.
Stereotypes extend to everything, which really makes them, well, "not there".
ASIANS DON'T EAT RICE. THEY EAT NORMAL FOOD LIKE YOU DO. /cry
I'm Greek. Yes, I eat gyros and break plates while yelling "OPA!" We do dance, get drunk and have a merry old time. Go ahead, stereotype me. I won't throw a tantrum. I hate when people are taught to be oversensitive.
You just said some stereotypes are funny, as how Asians eat rice and are good at math? Your saying that general stereotyping is insulting for everyone.
Well then, people need to have more humor. Just sayin'. -1
I try not to stereotype people to insult them. Sometimes, I may slip up because, let's face it, we all do that every once in a while. But I'm friends with people from other races and backgrounds, and I know most of them well enough to do things like Tora does.
But yeah, if you're actively trying to insult people with these stereotypes, you need to be kicked. +1
Haha, I understand this blog. When people stereotype Africans (what I am) as tribal, uncouth beings who can't speak words and just click to talk, it makes my very angry and disrespected. But me and my friend (who is Hispanic) jokingly insult each other cause we both know we don't mean a word of what we say though, so it is fine between the two of us.
I have a friend who's Mexican, and we were close enough to be able to fool everyone into thinking we were half-brothers, even though I don't have a trace of hispanic even ten generations back up my family tree. We kid around sometimes and I ask him if he got his green card yet. I even signed his shirt at the end of the school year, "Good luck on your citizenship test!" But he's not the type to be offended by this.
Stereotyping as an outright insult should stop. Even joking around, you should be careful, and look for signs that the other person isn't actually offended.
Nice blog. +1
i have 2 things to say
1st:ive been asked by someone "what do you eat" because im polish
and this was veary heartful
2nd:stereotypes arent bad if the person is joking, i also have a middleastern kid in my school and everyone JOKES about him being a terrorist including him
Streotyping fits into three main categories: Rascism, Sexism, and Ageism. Rascism is stereotyping based on a persons race or culture (eg:White people are superior to Black Peaople). Sexism is stereotyping based on a persons gender (eg:Women shouldn't be allowed to vote). And Ageism is stereotyping based on a persons age (eg: All old people cant drive) Of course, these stereotypes fall into many subsidory groups (eg: socialism, spiritualism, etc.). They aren't nice and should not be condoned. +1
