So I recently partook of a chatroom debate. I'll avoid the topic of the debate so a flame war doesn't start in the comments. There were a few individuals that held this debate at an intellectual level, but on the other hand, there were those that resorted to insults and incorrect assumptions based on opinion. And sadly, most debates that happen on this site end up in insults.
If you're going to join a debate, refrain from spewing insults like Bowser spews fire. And don't say things like "STOOOOOOOOPID" or "LOL UR DUM". This isn't only a troll-like behavior, it makes you look like a snob. Instead, either kindly point out something in that view that you disagree with or don't post anything.
Another thing, use accurate information. Don't just assume someone who disagrees with you automatically falls into a category in which he believes a certain thing. Try asking a person what his views are on a particular subtopic and then you can bring out a point (but don't bring it out as an insult). If you don't ask the person, look up some information about his beliefs. But do not run your side of the debate from something someone has told you if it's propaganda. Much of the information I've seen against one view has been inaccurate and those who use it as an argument are naive.
Also remember to have some respect for other people. They are probably steadfast in their views, so if you bring something up, bring it up in an intelligent and sophisticated manner. It's fine to stand your ground, but don't get angered. If you're having issues with becoming infuriated during a debate, maybe you should switch topics temporarily to cool down.
Debates can be fun and enlightening, but some users tend to mess up the whole thing. If you're not going to be nice, stay away from the debate and let those who are cultivated do the talking.
or we could all just stay away from debateing on this site... wait never mind if you even hint at what your beliefs are it'll start a debate, so thats not an option
