Note: This is not to be confused with the board game 'The Game of Life.'!

The Cellular Game of Life is an example of 'Cell Automata'. Cell automata is a grid with an infinite area that is bound by certain rules. Let's begin.

The Game of Life

The Rules:
If a cell has exactly 3 neighbors (adjacent dots) then that cell becomes live.

If a cell has less than 2 neighbors then that dot dies of loneliness (disappears)

If a cell has more than 3 neighbors it dies because they are too annoying.

Still Life Objects

This is an object on the grid that remains the same no matter how many generations (turns for RPG addicts) pass.

The block is the most basic one.

An oscillator is an object that changes throughout generations but will always return to its original state.

This is an example of one (The Blinker)

The Blinker is a period 2 oscillator. That means it takes two generations to return to its original state.

Gliders

These are objects that will move across the grid. They will do so infinitely on an infinite grid. They are technically oscillators but they won't always return to their original state on a finite grid.
