Hello, I am Peck. I am a Pigeon. I am writing this small journal using a feather of mine and some vomit(eew). It's about life as a Pigeon, being shunned around by Bigfeet,[what we call "hyu-mons",] and eating their castoff popcorn and late Friday-night vomit.
It started a little while ago when I was younger, in the nest we had on steel beams under a Loop "El" station. Those were easy days and food was easy-come. Then the Bigfeet decuded we were a "Nuisance" and put these clear plastic spikes on the steel beams. Some of us just got poked lightly enough to detect them and fly away, but most of us didn't see them until it was done. We found most signs were now armed with them too. There were not many places on which to roost, let alone land, easily. So we were forced to the ground. The Bigfeet kicked us around as they stomped angrily to whereever they were going. Eventually, we learnt to dodge their kicks, and for our smarter Pigeons, crap on their heads. Us young ones would void right where their feet would land- It was enjoyable!

We knew that Winter was coming, and that w/out any safe places for roosting, it'd be harder than usual. We also noticed that "Murders" of crows were beginning to inhabit our territory. Food was getting scarce, and that was bad, considering that we needed to fatten up as much as possible for Winter. We recently found some shelter: Some Pigeon scouts found some buildings with shingles missing. We could fit through the openings and wind up in the cozy attic of said buildings.

Meanwhile, the Crows were coming in huge numbers, hundreds of them. They were stealing food that we spent time gathering! However, luckily enough, some Bigfeet started killing off the Crows. We were grateful, and the Winter seemed less harsh with the warm attics and no-competition food. The only problem was that the Crows had brought a strain of flu when they flocked here, and it had passed onto some of us. We suspected that something was wrong when we noticed symptoms that had affected the Crows, now affecting our own kind. The symptoms, unfortunately, included vomiting, severe feather loss and, rarely, explosive diarrhea.

We Pigeons suffered from these symptoms on a larger scale than the Crows, on account of our tiny immune systems being unable to do anything to stabilize our bodies.It was very disgusting up there, in those Winter shelters' attics, especially after the first round of us got knocked off by that virus. All of this mess containing bodies, feathers, and feces. We felt sorry for our Brethren, but they had the last laugh at the expense of the Bigfeet: You see, they had to clean it up! True Karma at its best!

It's Spring now as I write this, and everything seems better off. No invading species, no flu. But, those spikes are still there, even more than last year.. We'll see how this Winter goes, eh?
