Hey everyone. I just saw the movie an hour ago, as of 1:37am. Fairly fresh in the memory.
Synopsis: In the year 2022, America has vastly improved as a nation with a strong economy and virtually nonexistent unemployment. This is thanks to the New Founding Fathers who, years before, proposed an annual purge, to satisfy our animal instincts and pent-up aggression. Usually, the poor are left unable to defend themselves, lacking the means or the might, and are typical victims during every Purge. But when one wealthy family incidentally rescues a would-be victim, those who were hunting him turn on "their own kind."
I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of horror movies. Why I chose to see this, I've no idea. However, at just under 90 minutes, The Purge is bearable. There is not much dialogue in the movie, so the acting is really left to screaming & physical stuff. (see: killing people.)
You will see Ethan Hawke do glorious battle with several masked "purgers", who are so intent on killing one victim that they decide to go after the family if they don't get their "homeless swine" back. I'm guessing that Guy Fawkes masks were not available/too silly to use for the gang of purgers, but the masks they chose worked. The movie is sort of slow until roughly 50 minutes in, then everyone starts killing everyone else for about half an hour. I recommend going with a group, only because you'll want to chat until any actual action happens. (This is coming from someone who has watched 2001: A Space Odyssey 4 times and still enjoyed it entirely.) The movie didn't use its slow time very well, so the sudden surge in violence might be a bit shocking, but long overdue. There's an equal amount of melee & artillery weapons, so enjoy.
Verdict
I can't help but feel that the movie was trying to get some message across, but it didn't dwell enough on backstory in the first 50 minutes to make much of an impression. The main characters at least try to stick to their morals, even after some displays of weakness. Overall, 7/10. Definitely see with friends, or you might just get bored.
If you saw it, let your opinion be known in the comments.
That's all for now.
P.S. Good to be back to blogging, look forward to my reviews of Queen albums later this month.
