Thea hesitantly opened her eyes, scared of what she might see. Something about this place was wrong, but she couldn't pinpoint what it was. Yellow. A mix of yellow and a thick green that looked like some sort of moldy chemical. She squinted past the object and focused on what she thought must be the Ocean. If she tried, she could touch it, but for some odd reason she felt peaceful, just lying there. But still, she felt a nagging feeling, telling her that something was off. Thea shifted her gaze back to the strange yellow object blocking her view from what lay around her. Suddenly it looked like...like a bone.
Thea scrambled to her feet and stared at it, horrified. She whipped her head around to take in her surroundings. Rotting bones, yellow and green from age, were dotted all along the shore. She screamed, the shrill sound piercing the air and echoing throughout the island. She stood, frozen, listening to the sound fade away. Suddenly, the realization hit her. Silence. Everything was silent. No birds were singing, there was no rustling of the wind, not even the Ocean made a sound. Thea felt fear well up in her, and not for the first time that day. Her eyes searched the desolate island for remains of the plane that had crashed. Nothing. She already knew that the pilot had stayed in the plane, hoping to land on this island. If he couldn't land safely, he had promised he would leave the plane after she did. Thea had jumped out the plane right before it crashed. The pilot never made it out the door. But still she hoped against all odds that he had survived the crash, as she needed someone-anyone to help her understand what was going on.
After searching for several minutes, Thea decided to explore. The silence unnerved her, but she knew it would be foolish to stand there all day. She slowly trudged towards the thick alignment of trees, trying not to make a sound for fear of alarming anything. She stopped short of a tree that had a peculiar carving on the trunk. ITS CARNIVOROUS
Thea burrowed her eyebrows in confusion. What was? The tree? Why couldn't they be more specific? Who carved this? Are they on the island? Are they watching me now? Thea looked suspiciously at the forest, wondering what lie there. Should she stay on the beach? Don't be a wimp, she scolded herself. She continued walking, the trees gradually thinning out. Thea saw no signs of life. No birds, mice, or even insects. She searched and searched and searched, but there was nothing but trees. She continued walking at a brisk pace, until the trees stopped all together. She stared, bewildered, at the very same beach she had stood only a short while ago. How had she gotten there? Suddenly exhaustion overwelmed her, and the matter left her mind entirely. She groggily cleared a spot on the beach and collapsed, falling into a deep sleep.
Thea awoke to the feeling of desire. She stood, entranced, looking at the ocean for but a moment, and then, as if they had a will of their own, her legs began to move. Thea stared at the alluring motion of the waves, the way it shined and glimmered in the sun as her legs continued to surge forward. A flash of red caught her eye. She watched as the colorful fabric moved with the waves and something awoke in her. Something screamed inside her, telling her that something was wrong, that she needed to run. She began to fight her own body, but it was holding her captive. Cold water pressed against her legs as her feet continued to deliver her to the water. She was up to her shoulders when it started.
Stinging pain, as if she was being continuously stabbed with a knife was slowly making it's way up her body. Suddenly she felt something bite her ankle. She shrieked in pain, sobbing as the water made its way up to her chin. As more and more mouths consumed her, she thought of the carving. ITS CARNIVOROUS. It was the water. The water was going to eat her. She sobbed until she was fully engulfed in the water. She continued to fight, trying to claw her way to the surface, but something yanked her even deeper into the water. Hands grabbed hold of her, and the biting became more vicious. She sucked in the salty water as she tried to scream. This is it, she thought. This was the end.
