Losing a friend is like losing something that helps your world go round. It hits you like a bullet. Remembering they are never more to be with you. Wishing that one thing had not happened, that one thing that took them from you forever. Knowing it was your entire fault.
I woke; I could feel my heart beating against my chest as a pair of small hands shook my bare shoulder. Lying on an old, ragged cot that I had found just a few hours before, I sat up shortly.
“Come on! We have to go!” The voice said that I knew to be my sister’s. My mind was still muddy and unclear, from just being shocked awake. Even so, my ears caught the panic and fear in her tone. Something must have been wrong. Knowing this I was quickly jumping to the soles of my feet. A shiver passing through me as my naked feet touched the cold floor.
“Please hurry! Chime, they are coming!” She cried more loudly, desperate to get us out now. My eyes locked onto my friend, my sister. The only person I had in this world now.
“Emi?--What’s going on?” I asked, slowly, my face cracking into a frown as I looked down at her. “What’s wrong?” I say, as my eyes dart around us for possible danger.
She responds by wrapping her tiny hand around mine, pulling me toward one of the two exits from this old shack. “I can feel it, the ground, Chime! It was trembling; I heard the sound of hooves. They are coming!” She pleads with me, trying to get through to me that something was wrong. Bits of her white hair clinging to her pale, yet flushed face from yelling.
Hearing her, I could feel my stomach drop. Feeling a sudden wave of dizziness wash over me, I managed to stand my ground. No, I thought, how could they find us? We had gotten so far away from that place. Left no traces to be seen, had some one rotted us out? I couldn’t let them capture us. There was no way I could let it happen.
Grabbing my sister hand tightly in my own, I forgot about everything. Only to snatch up the only weapon I had, being a dagger, and ran to the door with her. It was dark; if they went through the back there’d be no way to be seen by the monsters waiting.
Or at least I’d thought—!
Having got my hands around the rusty knob, just to have it jerked from my grip. My heart stopped against my ribs. Standing before us was a man, no the normal kind. A huge man, I saw him, with thick armor covering his body. Bracing a sword in his big hands, a killer, she’d seen them every time. Soulless creatures that would strike you down, and follow the orders of their master with out a blink of an eye.
Pushing back my sister to guard her, but it was too late. The hand of the monster had taken hold of me by my throat, lifting me from the ground as I could feel my air being cut off.
Gasping, grabbing at the huge hand encircling my neck, my eyes began to burn. “Emii!! Ru—“I had managed to choke out, before I was cut short of my plead. She won’t have listened any way. I could see her. Now gripping my dagger that I’d dropped, she tries to drive it down on the arm of the man. But she was all too late, and much too powerless.
Not with even a warning, the silver blade in the soldiers hand shot forward. Stabbing through Emi’s chest, catching her in place, my eyes widen in horror.
I could see her eye’s widen, the shock and pain registering in her body. Looking over at me as blood began to foam at her mouth, running down her pale chin, I trembled. A glazed look filling her eyes, with wet tears, just as I heard her whisper, “I’m sorry Sis…”, her voice falling as she slips under the dark coat of what could be death.
I could feel all warmth leave my body, leaving me empty. I knew, I knew, she was gone. And it was my entire fault for not having been able to protect her. I failed her. I killed her, I killed Emily. Tear strained down my cheek with my last thoughts and hopes, before I blacked out.
A short story I wrote. I drew the dagger to go with the story, so hope it goes well.
