Panic coursed through my veins. Tears stung my eyes and blinded my vision, while the sound of my rapid breathing and pounding heart rang in my ears. Pain shot through my entire body, and my lungs felt as if they would collapse at any moment. It was hopeless, and it was useless. And yet, I ran. I foolishly fled.
Everything within me screamed at me to stop. Stop and turn myself in. I did not know why I was running, except that I was being chased. I was being hunted. By what, I did not know. But whatever it was, it was on my heels, nipping in a fury of devilish hunger that would only be satisfied by my capture. It wanted my life.
I choked on a sob and stumbled on the uneven brick street. I cried out in desperation, but no one would help me. No one seemed the least bit concerned. They appeared to know why I was running, why I was being chased. I simply knew the consequences of my capture. They knew my crime- I did not. I painfully regained my footing and attempted to flee, when I heard a strong voice right behind me.
“Halt! In the name of the law I have a warrant for your immediate arrest and execution!”
I gasped in despair as two pairs of hands roughly grabbed my arms and choked as an arm locked around my neck. I saw a man approach me, wielding a gun that he had raised and pointed in my direction. I tried to make out his features, but oddly enough, they were fuzzy and indistinguishable.
“Please,” I begged. “I don’t know what I've done wrong!”
The man simply stood there, and without blinking, he fired at me. I felt the bullet rip through my chest, and unimaginable pain raged through my weak body.
I sat bolt upright, swallowing an anguished scream before it escaped my mouth. I opened my eyes to see bright flash of rosy light that filled my entire room quickly dissipate and leave behind a still, empty darkness. My hands shook and my breathing was quick and uneven. I inhaled deeply a few times, clearing my mind. It had only been a bad dream.
“Isis?”
His voice sounded like sadness.
“I’m right here, Ledger.”
His presence made me lonely.
“Why did you turn the light on? You woke me up.”
His touch felt wrong.
"I'm sorry."
I heard him shift positions and sigh, then the dark silence resumed. I laid back down and stared at the wall, my heart finally beginning to slow and breathing return to normal. I shut my eyes tight and tried to forget.
