Just less than half an hour ago at 1:53 PM on the US east coast, a 5.8-5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Virginia and Washington D.C. areas, centering from Mineral, VA. The tremors were said to be felt from North Carolina to New York City, and even as far south as Florida. There have been no reports of injuries or widespread damage, but government buildings like the Pentagon were swiftly evacuated and JFK airport has cancelled all flights.
Seismologists have already stated that the east coast's "old hard, cold" crust composition allows the earthquake waves to be transmitted very well, and in this case, even hundreds of miles away.
For many east coast residents, this incident was first. What are your thoughts?
A few updates: 5.9 is now the official number. Aftershocks are possible according to the USGS, but the US Weather Service insists that a tsunami is not expected. There are also tremor reports coming from as far north as Ottawa, Canada--as well as west from Detroit, Michigan.
I live in New York, and I felt it alright. It was REALLY scary because you never hear about earthquakes on the east coast. It was a pretty big tremor that I felt.
I have a friend vacationing in Toronto, Canada, and not even 2 minutes after the earthquake, she called me saying, "I just felt an earthquake!" So it probably went further than seismologists expect.
I wasn't too scared at first, until my dad started screaming, "HOLY [add explicit word here] IT'S AN EARTHQUAKE!" -_-
What really made me mad was that most of my friends were saying, "LOL! An earthquake just happened! :D" There's nothing funny about an earthquake if people can die and homes can be destroyed. *sigh* Some people these days... -3-'
I'm suprised I didn't feel any after-shocks. I thought with an earthquake at almost 6.0, there would be at least 1 big aftershock.
There has been two aftershocks so far, the first one right over the Epicenter of the earthquake at a 2.8 magnitude. The second one half a mile off at a 2.2 magnitude. There may be 1-2 more or possibly more then that.
Don't argue with idiots because they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
Oops. I accidentally deleted my other comment. But anyways, the national news stations like cnn and others were broadcasting how bad it was in Washington D.C. and New York. D.C. is 80 miles away from the quake and i'm only 30 miles! so, it was way more worse!
I live in Virginia, and when the earthquake started, I was home alone. It took me a second to process what was going on and I immediately darted for the door. By the time I got outside, it was over.
Goodbye my only friend. Oh, did you think I meant you?
it shook down here. (location private) i was playing wii, a Holy Mother Statue on top of a hospital near here got a huge crack and almost fell. I think its sacred. But, yea. What about hurricane irene? that is AWFULL. Earthquake, Hurricane, whats next? tornado? Tsunami? Global Warming?
